Rain Helps, but Your Trees Still Need More

Even though we’ve been getting some rain here in Centennial, Colorado, and surrounding areas, that doesn’t always mean our trees are getting everything they need. Rain provides valuable moisture, but trees also depend on soil nutrients to support healthy roots, foliage, and overall growth. During Colorado’s hot, dry conditions, deep root watering can provide the extra moisture and nutrients trees need to stay healthy, and it's important year-round for maintaining tree health through the seasons.

Why Deep Root Watering Matters
Deep root watering delivers water below the soil surface and directly into the tree’s root zone. Unlike light rainfall or surface watering, which may only wet the top layer of soil, deep watering helps moisture reach the deeper roots that support long-term tree health. This is especially important when soil is dry or compacted. Even after heavy rain, water may run off rather than soaking deep enough into the ground to even reach the roots.

Rain Doesn't Always Tell the Whole Story
A lawn may look refreshed after rain, but the soil around your trees may still be too dry. Mature or stressed trees often need more consistent moisture than just what occasional rainfall provides, and prolonged dryness, especially in drought conditions like we have been experiencing here in Colorado this year, can make your trees even more vulnerable to pests and diseases.

Deep Watering Encourages Stronger Roots
When moisture reaches deeper into the soil, tree roots are encouraged to grow downward rather than remaining concentrated near the surface.
Deeper, stronger roots can help trees better withstand:
  • Drought and dry conditions
  • Summer heat in Colorado
  • Pest infestation
  • Diseases
  • Sudden temperature fluctuations
  • Seasonal stress factors
Water Is Important, But So Are the Nutrients
Healthy trees need more than just water. They need Nutrients in the soil to help support strong root development, healthy foliage, and the tree’s natural ability to defend itself against stress, pests, and diseases. Deep root watering with fertilization delivers water and nutrients directly into the root zone, where they're more readily available to the tree.

Don't Forget About Iron for the Maples
Maple trees can be particularly sensitive to nutrient deficiencies, including iron deficiency. Deep-root watering with fertilization and iron can provide additional support when maples show signs of stress, poor foliage color, or nutrient deficiency, but it's better to be proactive and make sure they're getting the iron and other nutrients they need before it's too late.
If your maple is turning yellow or its foliage doesn't look as healthy as it normally does, it may be time to take a closer look at what might be happening below the surface.

How to Recognize Drought Stress
Your trees may be telling you they need additional care. Watch for signs such as:
  • Wilting or curling leaves
  • Leaves falling too early
  • A thinning canopy
  • Yellowing or abnormal foliage
  • Dry soil around the base of the tree
  • Overall decline or reduced growth
These symptoms can indicate that your tree isn't getting enough moisture and nutrients in the root zone.

Healthy Roots Lead to Healthier Trees
A tree with adequate moisture and nutrients is better equipped to handle stressful conditions. Deep root watering can help reduce dependence on shallow surface moisture and encourage a stronger, deeper root system.

That stronger foundation can make a major difference when Colorado experiences extended periods of heat and dryness like we have this year.

Protect Your Trees Before They Show Serious Stress
Your trees are one of the most valuable parts of your landscape; proactive care can help protect that investment. While the rain we receive is beneficial, it shouldn't be the only source of moisture and nutrients your trees receive, especially during hot, dry periods.

If your trees are showing signs of drought stress, deep root watering may be exactly what they need. Providing water and nutrients where the tree needs them most can help support stronger roots, healthier foliage, and a healthier tree for years to come.
